The Pull of the Moon

Fifteen
bangs the screen door
drops off the porch, melts into air
parents folded from sight, pressing
hard against skin, everything pocket-thin

Eighty-four
watches the night-blooming
cereus slowly open, scolds dandelions, works fingers
under roots, holds onto earth, breathes
hard dark-secented air
